Flying with LED props

Guide · Travel

What to know before you fly with your prop.

Perform props have a built-in lithium-ion battery. Airlines allow such devices in luggage under clear conditions. Here is a summary and a note you can print and put in your bag.

For batteries on a plane, what counts is the energy in watt-hours (Wh), not the mAh figure. The conversion:

Wh = mAh × V / 1000, where V is the nominal voltage of the cell.

  • The battery in Perform props has a capacity of 3500 mAh at most. The exact figure for your product is on the product page in the e-shop.
  • Each battery is a single Li-ion cell below 5 V, so its energy is less than 17.5 Wh — far below the 100 Wh limit.
  • The exact Wh figure for each product will be added.

A summary of the general IATA rules for passengers with a device containing a Li-ion battery of up to 100 Wh:

  • You may take the device in carry-on and in checked baggage without the airline’s approval.
  • Electronics should preferably travel in carry-on baggage.
  • In checked baggage the device must be completely switched off and protected from accidental activation.
  • Each person may carry at most 15 such devices; more only with the airline’s approval.
  • Spare batteries and power banks go in carry-on baggage only.

Preparing the prop for travel

  1. Make sure the device is switched off. A reliable way: connect it to a charger for a moment and unplug the cable — the circuit switches off.
  2. Pack it so that the button cannot be pressed by accident, for example in a hard case.
  3. Put the USB cover on the port.
  4. Put the printed note (below) in your bag.

Print this page (Ctrl+P / Cmd+P) — only the note is printed.
